Why Do We Yawn?
Everybody yawns — babies, adults, and even animals like dogs and cats. But why do we do it? For many years, scientists believed that we yawn because our body needs more oxygen. However, recent studies suggest a different explanation.
According to some researchers, yawning helps to cool down the brain. When the temperature of the brain rises, a big yawn brings cooler air into the body and lowers that temperature. This may be the reason why we often yawn when we are tired or bored — situations in which the brain tends to get warmer.
There is also another interesting fact: yawning is "contagious". When we see another person yawning, we frequently start to yawn too. Many scientists believe this happens because humans are social beings, and this reaction is connected to empathy — our ability to understand the feelings of others.
